A Year to Miss

A YEAR TO MISS
by S. Qiouyi Lu

a firestorm
the creator questioning life

a nation long-simmering

the right to cry
did not return their life,
births another series of emotions,
every person a puzzle

at the end,
reveal to the world the names of all
using profits to parade agency.

Land Acknowledgement

I am a settler on the historical lands of the Gabrieliño-Tongva Tribe. I acknowledge that Los Angeles came to exist through the enslavement, exploitation, and forced assimilation of Tongva peoples, in particular through the California mission system. As I am both based in Los Angeles and tie much of my identity to the region, I feel it is only right to commit to telling the true history of the area, as one of many steps to decolonize and return the land to its original stewards.

Find out more about land acknowledgements at #HonorNativeLand. 4Rs has an introductory primer for non-indigenous people about the meaning of “Land Back.” You can also find concrete actions to take in this land reparations & indigenous solidarity toolkit.
