WisCon 40

May 27, 2016 - May 30, 2016

My scheduled events:

Nonstandard Pronouns in SF/F and Real Life
Friday, 2:30–3:45 pm, Conference 1
Margaret McBride (M). Julie Andrews, Bronwyn B., Grá Linnaea, S. Qiouyi Lu

For those times when binary third-person pronouns won’t do, what can we use? “They” has been used as a singular pronoun since at least Chaucer’s time, but only now is it making inroads into formal speech. People have been trying to introduce other gender-neutral pronouns into English since at least the 1700s. What other nonstandard pronouns are currently in use? How has SF/F dealt with both gender-neutral and nonbinary pronouns? Which ones have garnered attention?

“Women and Trans/Non-binary people” : The Pitfalls of Haphazard Gender Inclusion
Friday, 9:00–10:15 pm, Assembly
Keffy R. M. Kehrli (M). Dylan Edwards, Alexandra Erin, S. Qiouyi Lu

Attempts to create calls for submissions/lists of authors with marginalized genders have come under criticism for asking for “women and non-binary” or “women and transgender people”. Adding trans and non-binary identities to “woman” often adds additional confusion for trans masculine people (are trans men included as “sort of women”, or excluded as “not a marginalized gender identity”?). Does inclusion of non-binary identities with women imply that those identities are necessarily “feminine”? Does the addition of “trans” as a separate category imply that trans women are not members of the group that is ALL women? How can we more effectively promote the inclusion of transgender, genderqueer, or non-binary authors?

Science Fiction in Translation
Sunday, 10:00–11:15 am, Caucus
Jaymee Goh (M). Arrate Hidalgo, S. Qiouyi Lu

As Anglo SFF as a whole becomes more aware of the Rest Of The World, translation projects seem ready to see a boom. Let’s hear it from translators: how difficult is it to translate SFF concepts from one language to another? What trends are we noticing in what types of stories get translated, from which regions? What SF-nal influences are visible across borders? What can readers and editors do to increase the amount of translated fiction in the genre’s magazines?

Science Fiction Destroys the Gender Binary!
Sunday, 1:00–2:15 pm, Michelangelos
Nino Cipri, S. Qiouyi Lu, Sunny Moraine, Nicasio Reed, Levi Sable, David J. Schwartz

Join six gender-destroying and genre-blending authors for a reading that will dance on the grave of the gender binary.
